Configuring the Patient module

Navigate as admin user to the Site Setup and click on Patient settings. A page with six different tabs will open, lets step through them one by one

Default. Patient Medical Record Number

The Default page is about using a Patient Medical Record Number, MRN. It is a unique identifier assigned to Patient in electronic health record and healthcare systems to track their medical history

There are checkboxes for

Making the MRN field compulsory at sample registration and when creating or editing Patients
Allowing verification of samples with temporary MRN. If selected, users will be able to verify samples that have a Patient with a temporary MRN
Allowing publishing samples with a temporary MRN. If selected, users will be able to publish results of samples for Patients with temporary MRNs
Displaying alerts for samples with temporary MRNs. When selected, an alert icon is displayed for samples for Patients with temporary MRNs

Identifiers

List of Patient identifiers to make available in addition to the Medical Record Number

Enter the IDs you’ll be using and capture a unique key for it. They can be sorted for order of appearance by moving them up and down in the list with their arrow keys

Typical examples are Passport ID, National ID, Driver ID, Voter ID etc.

Field Settings

Here the user can

Patient name entry format on the Sample registration form
Age introduction. When enabled, either the Patient’s age or date of birth will be used. Else, only date of birth will be available
Age in years. When selected only years will be displayed for Patients older than 1 year, and not months and days. Patients younger than a year us the latter
Gender identity. If selected, a gender identity is available to include transgender and other identities. A field for Patient gender at birth, Sex, is compulsory
Address Format. Configure Patient addresses using the variables $address, $zip, $city, $country, $subdivision1, $subdivision2, $type

Marital Statuses

Capture the legally defined marital statuses you’ll be using with unique keys. They can be sorted for order of appearance by moving them up and down in the list with their arrow keys

Examples are: Annulled, Divorced, Interlocutory, Legally Separated, Married, Common Law, Polygamous, Never Married, Widowed etc.

Races

If you plan to capture race information about Patients, capture them here with the codes you want to use, that of CDC is used by default. They are also in use in LOINC, FHIR and other medical ontologies

Typical values are

1002-5 American Indian or Alaska Native
2028-9 Asian
2054-5 Black or African American
2076-8 Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, etc.

Patient Ethnicity is similarly codified. Typical values are

2138-6 Andalusian
2139-4 Asturian

2142-8 Belearic Islander

Sharing

Here you can decide how to share Patients between care providing institutions, the LIMS Clients

Share patient on sample creation. If selected, patients created on sample registration forms, will automatically be available to users from the client the sample belongs to
Allow patients in clients. When enabled, Patients can be created inside client folders and made available on a Client Patients tab
