Configuring Bika LIMS Document Management for ISO 17025 Compliance

I have been working on implementing Bika’s document management capabilities recently, and thought I’ll recap what it is all about, and how it offers a very affordable and better alternative than expensive Document Management Systems (DMS). All Open Source

Laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 face strict requirements for controlling documented information and providing auditors with clear records. Managing it separately from the LIMS, is much more work, error prone and can lead to duplication and version conflicts.

Bika LIMS is built on Plone, an industrial-grade open-source Content Management System (CMS) known for its security, workflows, and reliability. It already has the features necessary for a DMS. No separate tool needed - LIMS and DMS are integrated in one familiar environment, with:

  • Role-based authorization. Who can view or edit documents

  • Approval workflows

  • Automatic versioning and audit trails

All directly support the ISO 17025 clauses on technical records.

It makes for an auditor-friendly presentation, displaying LIMS data - QC control charts, maintenance records, etc. - in the DMS.

Whether you’re preparing for accreditation, streamlining SOP management, or just tired of juggling separate systems, Bika’s DMS is a powerful, open-source solution for laboratories.
